What's In The VTT

Vicarious Trauma Training provides participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to look after their own personal mental health and wellbeing, when dealing with people who have experienced trauma, or when working with difficult, emotional, sensitive or potentially traumatic material and information.

The VTT can be delivered as a 2 Day or 1 Day course, depending on the needs of your organization.

What's In The VTT
  • Understand how the brain and body operate when responding to trauma and potentially traumatic material and information
  • Recognise the complex impacts of trauma and vicarious trauma on behaviour, cognition and emotions.
  • Understand the power and importance of empathy, how it can help and hinder our own wellbeing as a responder, and apply strategies to utilise empathy effectively for ourselves and the person who has experienced trauma.
  • Identify unhelpful interpersonal dynamics which commonly arise when assisting people in highly emotional scenarios, and appropriately manage these for the best outcomes
  • Identify signs they may be overstepping the limits of their role, and be able to respond effectively to ensure they are acting appropriately within professional boundaries.
  • Tailor their communication to elicit relevant facts as required, while also minimising the risk of re-traumatisation and vicarious trauma.

  • Apply strategies to build Compassion Satisfaction as a tool for preventing Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue.
  • Apply the 6 principles of Trauma Informed Care to effectively look after their own wellbeing when working with difficult material, or people who have experienced trauma.
  • Understand and apply a healthy Debriefing model to respond effectively to challenging interactions, and avoid falling into patterns of unhelpful debriefing
  • Utilise an advanced Self Reflection tool to manage personal ́hotspots ́.
  • Understand the science of exposure, desensitisation, avoidance, and be able to effectively identify and respond to potential personal triggers.
  • Apply strategies and tools to build and maintain their personal emotional fitness, when dealing with highly sensitive information.
